As you can see, whatever your sailing ability there will be a flotilla option for you. With your safety and enjoyment in mind, we insist that two individuals, both over 18, have had some flotilla or sailing experience as detailed in each level below and are nominated as Skipper and Experienced Crew. These levels have been devised to help you to choose the best location for your holiday.
LEVEL 0 - EASY
You will require a minimum of one of the following:
- '3 day Flotilla Training Course' certificate
- 5 days dinghy experience plus 'Sunsail Two Day Yacht Refresher' certification
- 5 days yacht experience including helming the boat under sail and power
- RYA Competetant Crew qualification
Weather: 0-15 knots wind
Navigation: Line of sight sailing, basic knowledge of charts, able to plot your position
Anchor/Mooring: Primarily mooring buoys, areas of good holding for anchors, protected anchorages
LEVEL 1
You will require a minimum of:
- 5 days or 100 miles as skipper on an equivalent size yacht
Weather: 5-20 knots of wind
Navigation: Line of sight sailing, basic knowledge of charts, able to plot your position
Anchor/Mooring: Primarily mooring buoys, areas of good holding for anchors, protected anchorages
LEVEL 2
You will require a minimum of one the following:
- 10 days or 200 miles as skipper on an equivalent yacht
- RYA Day Skipper qualification
- ICC qualification
Weather: 10-20 knots of wind
Navigation: Understand tidal flow, ability to navigate in open waters
Anchor/Mooring: Primarily anchoring, protected anchorages, Mediterranean style anchoring and/or marina slips
LEVEL 3
You will require a minimum of one of the following:
- 20 days or 400 miles as skipper on an equivalent size yacht
- RYA Day SKipper qualification with experience to a higher level
- RYA Coastal Skipper qualification
- ICC qualification with experience to a higher level
Weather: 10 - 25 knots
Navigation: Understand large tidal variations, cope with strong current and be able to make a passage plan
Anchor/Mooring: Primarily anchoring, some slightly more exposed anchorages with poor anchor holding
WIND AND SAILING CONDITIONS
Please bear in mind that even in a Level 0 sailing area there is always the possibility of much stronger winds on occasion. The winds strengths shown for each flotilla are those typically encountered during the sailing season.
ANCHORING AND BERTHING
Mooring your yacht is stress free with your Lead Crew there to help. Usually they will arrive ahead of you to lend a hand if needed, and in most destinations the friendly locals are keen to help too! mooring fees vary from destination to destination so your Lead Crew will advise each day.
