Croatia enjoys 8% tourist rise

People taking a yacht charter in Croatia could have had a hand in an 8% increase in visitors to Croatia since January. The country's mesmerising blue waters are no longer the best kept secret in Europe.

Damir Bajs, Croatia's tourism minister, said: "If we talk about numbers of visits and overnight stays, this is certainly the most successful year in Croatia's tourism."

Ministry figures showed that approximately 6.2 million people visited Croatia between January and July, which was 450,000 more than during the same period a year earlier.

July was a particularly busy month, with three million tourists travelling to Croatia - 4.8% more than July 2010.

In 2010, 10.6 million tourists visited Croatia, generating 6.24 billion euro (£5.41 billion) for the economy.
