Rum's ready for Cowes Week sailors

Cowes Week

It's hard not to grin from ear-to-ear at the very thought of sailing Solent waters by day and supping fine rum by night.

Escaping the confines of the office and shrugging off the stresses of daily life to take in a silky sea breeze is something most of us regularly daydream about. But that will be the reality for around 8,000 competitors at this year's Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.

Mount Gay Rum will once again be on hand, as the regatta's supporting sponsor, to bring a Caribbean flavour to proceedings and make sure no one goes thirsty. The rum has been a big hit with sailors since it was first created in Barbados in 1703.

However, there's no need to sit behind the desk at work lamenting what might have been because Sunsail is providing a fantastic opportunity for people to get involved in Cowes Week 2012 , which runs from August 11 to 18.

After compiling the largest one-design fleet in the world with its brand new F40 yachts, Sunsail is giving enthusiasts the chance to test their skills with the Cowes Week Race Charter Package. This includes seven days of racing aboard a Sunsail F40 and incorporates marina fees and entry into the post-race daily prize party.

For those who can't afford to take the whole week off, Sunsail's One Day Racing Package could be the perfect solution because it provides all the excitement of racing along with an accomplished skipper. Alternatively, the Hospitality Day Package provides the ultimate in luxury sailing.

And, of course, everyone will get the chance to savour the delights of Mount Gay Rum, which is the official 'Regatta Rum'. Alongside the traditional beverage, enthusiasts, sailing experts and the press will also be given the chance to sample Mount Gay Eclipse Rum and Mount Gay Extra Old Rum at a number of sailing events.

The main prize for a lucky few will be the chance to pick up Mount Gay Rum Red Caps from the event. The caps, which have become a badge of honour, can be picked up from regattas across the world. Many sailors are keen to collect one from every event they've taken part in - but they'll have to be quick, as only the first 500 competitors to enter the Mount Gay Rum Red Cap crew party at Peppermint Shepards Wharf on August 16 will get one.

Mount Gay Rum brand manager, Alvin Saal, explained how delighted he is to be associated with the successful sporting event. He said: "It's a great opportunity for us to connect and reward our loyal followers, the sailing community and also introduce the premium rum brand to new consumers. Mount Gay Rum has long been associated with sailors and the sea and as the official 'Regatta Rum', competitors can enjoy their favourite Mount Gay Rum after a competitive day on the water."
