RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper Exam
To learn the skills and techniques required to Skipper safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night including passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, yacht handling under sail and power, adverse weather and emergencies.
Pre-course experience20 days (2 as skipper) 400 miles and 12 night hours. Those without Practical Course Completion will require 30 days (2 as skipper) 800 miles in tidal waters and 12 night hours within the last 10 years. Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
Ability after courseConfidently Skipper a yacht in coastal waters by day and night and take responsibility for crew members.
Duration6 to 10 hours for one candiate, 8 to 14 hours for two. Run as 2 day exam over a weekend.
