Yacht Course Example Itinerary
FLIGHTS
We have a dedicated onsite Flights Team and will happily help you arrange your flights to Lanzarote.
TRANSFERS
You will need to catch a taxi at your own cost (approx. £25/£30) from the rank outside the airport, to La Casa Roja (the Red House), Marina Rubicon, Playa Blanca. The yachts can be found on the first pontoon at the Marina side on the Red House.
Embarkation Sunday afternoon
Course start Monday 0900
Course finish and disembarkation Friday 1700
You will be able to store luggage on board your yacht from 9am SUnday morning. Just contact the Duty Instructor when you arrive. You also have the option to stay on board your yacht until 9am Sunday morning, on a bed only basis.
Sunday
At the Marina you will be introduced to one of the Sunsail Lanzarote instructors allocated a berth on board your Sunsail Sunfast 37 yacht and given a basic ‘live on board’ briefing. After stowing your luggage, you have the rest of the afternoon to yourself and can join the rest of the crew for a welcome drink in the evening.
If there’s anything you’d like to know about your boat, the marina or the island itself please ask your skipper or a member of the Sunsail team. However, a full yacht and safety briefing will be given on Monday morning at the start of your course.
Welcome Drink - Sunday
This is a good opportunity to meet everyone on the course. A member of staff will give a brief welcome talk
before dinner ashore. You are free to dine wherever you wish. Your group may sometimes benefit from group discounts at named restaurants during the week.
Monday to Friday
Each day starts at approx. 0900 hrs and finishes at approx. 1700 hrs. The syllabus will be sent to you with your course confirmation paperwork, but is also described in the G15 RYA Logbook. Your yacht is already provisioned for the five day course with inclusive breakfast, lunch and one evening meal on board. There is free time in the evening when the crew can dine ashore wherever they wish. Your course will finish later on one night of the week so that you may experience sailing in the dark. During the week you will experience a variety of ports and marinas from lively towns like Corralejo in the north of Fuertaventura to La Sociedad (Caleta del Sebo) on the southern shore of Isla Graciosa where there are no cars and the way of life is very peaceful and almost completely untouched by tourism.
Friday 1700hrs
Your course ends back at Marina Rubicon. Crews usually enjoy drinks and dinner together, but you are free to leave if you wish. If you have chosen to stay aboard your yacht you do not have to vacate until 9am Sunday morning.
Children on courses
• Children aged 13+ - Sunsail welcome your older children on any of our courses at any time of year as long as they are accompanied by at least one adult. Under 16s can get qualified as Comp Crew, over 16s can become Day Skipper.
Places to Visit and Activity options
Marina Rubicon has excellent facilities including its own swimming pool, tennis courts and showers. Tennis racquets and balls are available to hire (deposit required) but you may wish to bring your own. The marina has many bars and restaurants to choose from as well as duty free and designer shopping. There is a bank with a cash point, a pharmacy, a supermarket and very reasonable car hire.
Playa Blanca (approx. 20 mins walk) is packed with shops and eateries and has an Internet Café and various sports bars. There are two sandy beaches on the way to town which usually offer a variety of watersports. If you’re feeling energetic you can walk up the small volcano near the town for a good view.
Car Hire
Available from Marina Rubicon from as little as 18 Euros per day. You can easily drive around the island in a day (on the right) so don’t forget your driving licence!

What to bring?
• Tickets, money passport and driving licence if you plan to hire a car.
Clothing – Lanzarote enjoys a pleasant temperature all year, BUT be prepared for all weather conditions.
• Hopefully you will have good weather so we advise you have a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, shorts, T-shirts beach towel and swimwear.
• In cooler weather it is much warmer to wear multiple thin layers than one thick layer. Fleece top, gloves, comfortable trousers / tracksuit, deck shoes / sailing boots or white-soled trainers. We do not recommend jeans as they take a long time to dry.
• Please note that all personal items are brought at your own risk. You may wish to bring your own waterproofs although Waterproofs are provided (Douglas Gill Coastal edition) For hygiene reasons, we do not hire out sailing footwear.
Accommodation
For practical courses
• You will be sleeping on board in shared cabins.
• Duvet, sheets, pillow and shower towel are all provided.
• PLEASE NOTE Bring your things in a soft holdall as there is little storage on board the yacht.
Catering Arrangements
• Breakfast, lunch, one evening meal and non-alcoholic beverages are provided on board together with one evening meal. You are welcome to purchase locally any extra nibbles you may require, but there are a huge number of restaurants to dine at every night.
• We do not specifically cater for vegetarian or other dietary needs and we therefore suggest you bring alternative provisions as required.
• Evening meals are at your own expense. Your skipper can recommend good restaurants at each overnight stop.
• Please note that you will be expected to help with the cooking, washing up and general housekeeping of the yacht.
Log book
• You will require RYA logbook G15 for your course. If you have not already ordered a log book you can purchase one from our UK office. If you ordered one when you made your booking it will be sent out to you.
Recommended Reading
• RYA Practical and/or Theory Course books. These can be purchased in advance direct from the sales team at the Sunsail Port Solent office or the RYA.
Money and Marina Fees
• The local currency is the EURO.
• Money can be changed at the airport and there is a cash point at Marina Rubicon.
• Mooring/marina fees are NOT included in the course fees. Any costs incurred for berthing will be spilt between the crew. Mooring fees are approximately £30 each per week depending on the itinerary.
Photography
• An essential part of the success of our brochures is using photography that gives clients a true idea of the product, rather than using models. During the course of the season, we have photographers on site at our bases. If a photographer is on site at any time during your holiday we will advise you on your arrival at the base. If you have strong objections to close up photography of yourself and party, please indicate your feelings to the photographer at the time.
Sunsail – Respecting Destinations
Sunsail remains committed to looking after the environment and supporting the cultures where we operate. Over many years our clients have helped us to ensure that our presence does not negatively impact these areas. Please continue to assist us to leave these areas
‘As good or better than we found them’ i.e.
• Sewerage management. Always use pump out facilities
in marinas where available. Otherwise, please avoid discharge in busy anchorages and marinas and prevent contamination to humans and bottom sediments/coral reef inhabitants by pumping out as far as possible offshore.
• Avoid pumping oily bilge water or other hazardous
substances into the sea.
• Be litter conscious - never throw rubbish overboard and
minimize the use of plastics and non biodegradable products.
• Observe the laws that govern fish catch sizes, and the
touching or handling of marine wildlife.
• Keep a safe distance when viewing marine life, approach
side on and stopping with propellers in neutral.
• Identify dark water areas as possible important shallow
ecosystems.
• Use mooring buoys where available over coral reefs. If
anchoring, drop anchors in sand, away from living reefs.
• Take care not to crush and break corals and reef
dwellings with body parts, fins and equipment when snorkelling or swimming.
• Avoid purchase of marine ornamental souvenirs and the
harvest of endangered fish.
We hope that these notes will help you make the most of your course and your time spent in Lanzarote. Please read through carefully and contact the Aftersales Team on 023 9222 2894 if you have any queries.
We hope that you have a great time and thank you for booking with Sunsail.
