Sunsail’s UK base at Port Solent, on the South Coast of England, has an exceptional fleet of yachts available for bareboat yacht charter.  The waters of the Solent have long been a magnet for the experienced sailor in search of challenges – this is the home of the world-famous Cowes Week Regatta - whilst also providing plenty of opportunity for more gentle sailing.

And whether you are looking for some serious partying (in which case Cowes and Portsmouth are the towns to head for) or low-key socialising in some of the picturesque coastal villages for which this part of England is renowned is more your speed, our bareboat charter can take you there.

Sailing in the Solent

The protected waters of the Solent offer a unique and challenging bareboat yacht charter experience. In the summer, local sea breezes prevail and there is a tidal range of 4 metres. Moorings are generally in well-equipped marinas. The South Coast of England is all about sailing, and you will find the coastline well-populated with like-minded sailors, well-stocked chandleries and excellent facilities. And for those who wish to explore further afield, France and the Channel Islands are within easy reach.

The Solent Highlights

Here at our Port Solent base, you will benefit from world-class sailing conditions and testify of spectacular scenery. Your sailing programme can be completed by stopovers at excellent marinas, and will be able to unwind in traditional pubs, visit the lively towns and quaint coastal villages or even places of historical interest.

  • Cowes

    With varied and challenging waters to be sailed virtually from its doorstep, coupled with a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere, its not surprising that a visit to Cowes will have you fooled into thinking you had arrived on foreign shores. Cowes and neighbouring East Cowes grew from a cluster of fishermen's dwellings around the two coastal forts built here by Henry VIII on the opposite banks of the River Medina, and were named after the two off-shore sandbanks or cows.

  • Lymington

    Once well known for being a smugglers refuge, due to the winding channel harbour entrance and subterranean passages leading from the quay, Lymington is now a haven for yachting enthusiasts who enjoy the advantages of the double tides.

    Running between the towns of Cowes and Newport, the Medina River offers four miles of relaxing cruising for those seeking respite from the challenging sailing of the Solent. This safe and easily navigable channel starts from iconic Cowes and provides a rich insight into the thriving maritime industry that this part of the island once held.
