Overview

Over the years, the Regatta has grown in size and strength due largely to the support of racing enthusiasts around the world, who return year after year to compete, as well as the people, businesses, and Government of the BVI . Today, the Regatta is one of the Caribbean’s premier annual racing events. The BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival has something for everyone, whether you come to race, cruise, or just party!

The Festival kicks off first with 3 days of coastal racing and parties, followed by a Maritime Heritage Day at Nanny Cay. After that, the week culminates with the main event, the Spring Regatta which includes 3 days of non-stop, highly competitive racing action in three different areas in and around Sir Francis Drake Channel with racing divisions for one-design, bareboat, and performance cruising yachts, just to name a few.

Before, during, and after the races, the Regatta Village takes on a carnival-like atmosphere with food, drinks, games, dancing and other forms of entertainment for landlubbers and yachtsmen who converge to eat, drink and make merry.

Racing enthusiasts who have experienced the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival return year after year and they all agree that you have not sailed until you sail the waters of the BVI.

Sailing instructions will be available in the skipper packages and at the Committee Desk located in the Regatta Village at Nanny Cay during the event.

Classification

Yachts in this class must be owned or managed by a known bareboat operator acceptable to the Regatta Committee. Yachts shall conform to all restrictions for the Jib & Main Class except as follows: a) Bow numbers will be supplied; b) Spinnaker poles or other forms of bearing out spars are not allowed. c) Yachts must carry all the equipment normally carried on a bareboat charter in its normal position except for the dinghy and its motor, oars, and fuel tank. Biminis and sail covers may be removed and stowed below but must remain on board, along with the frame. Any boats found to be stripped or lightened shall be subject to a penalty. Yachts must comply with all safety requirements including that no part of an anchor shall overhang the bow while racing.

Background Racing Information

The CSA Rating Rule belongs to the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) which uses a ‘time on time’ handicapping rule. A low rating means that less time will be added to your overall racing time, whereas a higher rating will have more time added to your racing time. Generally, the higher the rating, the faster the boat should sail. (For example, all else being equal, a boat with a furling mainsail will have a lower rating than a boat with a fully battened mainsail, because a fully battened mainsail will tend to increase sailing performance.)

This is an international race and may include any or all, around the island, buoy, and/or point-to-point racing. (Racing formats are subject to change.)
