New to sailing

Everything a first timer needs to know

Welcome aboard!

We know that starting your sailing adventure can be a bit daunting; there are a lots of new terms to learn, plenty of strange equipment to get to grips with and then once you’ve got the skills, you have whole oceans of destinations to pick from!

Even if you’ve never sailed before we have a range of options to get you started.

What do I need to sail?

In order to sail in most of our destinations, you will need to have passed the RYA Day Skipper or ICC qualification. Otherwise, you will need to fill out our sailing CV beforehand to show your level of skill.  If you are starting from scratch you can take Competent Crew or Day Skipper course at any of our sailing schools across the world, or combine a flotilla holiday with learning on our Flotilla Zero and Flotilla Hero courses in Greece and Croatia.

Learn how to sail

We have sailing schools across the world. Take your pick a huge range of sailing courses at our flagship sailing school in Port Solent which will take you all the way from Start Yachting to Yachtmaster, or head overseas and learn to sail in Croatia, Greece, Thailand, Australia or BVI to combine a holiday in the sun with the beginning of your sailing adventure. Or you could combine learning how to sail with a flotilla holiday on our Flotilla Zero.

Hire a skipper

Experience the excitement of a sailing holiday, without needing to know anything about sailing! Hire an expert Sunsail skipper to be your personal driver and tour guide, letting them take the wheel or even picking up a little few sailing skills along the way. They’re full of local knowledge and always know the best bays, beaches and towns to visit along the way, and they’ll be happy to take you to where you want to go.

Corporate sailing events

Even without any sailing know-how, you can join us on sailing events from staff training days to team building and hospitality sessions out on the water. Our event coordinators will organise every detail on your behalf, from travel, accommodation and catering to entertainment and branding, as well as making sure that our experienced skippers are at the helm. Leave the office behind and take to the seas for an unforgettable corporate event.
