Funding the Future

Welcome to the Sunsail’s Funding the Future campaign. It’s our little way of giving back to sailing’s grassroots.

Sailing clubs are the lifeblood of our sport, and play a key role in getting people out on the water. We are proud to deliver holidays and courses designed for sailors, by sailors, and are determined to do all we can to promote and help the UK’s Yacht and Sailing Clubs.

What are we giving away and why?

We at Sunsail are dedicated to getting as many people sailing as possible. We love our sport and we think everyone who wants to have a go should get the opportunity. Sailing Clubs make sailing accessible for millions of people, but they often lack funding and struggle to survive.

This year, we want to reward one deserving club with £5,000 to invest in facilities, equipment and its members. The winning club will also get the chance to meet our ambassador, record-breaking British sailor Dee Caffari MBE, who will come to the winner’s club house for a live Q&A and celebration evening as well as earning a place on Sunsail’s stand at the London Boat Show in January 2017 (three tickets) to help promote their club to sailors from across the country.

All UK sailing club members will also receive 15% off worldwide Sunsail holidays on both bareboat and flotilla. Email sailingclubs@sunsail.com and ask for the exclusive promo code.

Who can enter?

Any sailing or yacht club based within the United Kingdom.

How do I enter?

You will need to nominate a lead person from your sailing / yacht club that will be responsible for filling out and submitting the entry form. This person needs to be a member of your sailing / yacht club and must be over 18 years old. Once you have chosen your lead person, they will need to fill out the competition form that your club should have received via email from Sunsail. If they have not, please contact sailingclubs@sunsail.com to request a copy.

The completed form can either be submitted by email to sailingclubs@sunsail.com or posted to Funding the Future c/o Sunsail, DST House, St Marks Hill, Surbiton, KT6 4BH.

Only one entry allowed per sailing club.

Our team will shortlist the best entries according to our criteria and then pass them on for our panel of judges to review. The winner will be determined by merit and judged on the club’s need, and how they would use the grant. Please feel free to send along any extra information you wish us to see in the email.

Can I speak to someone over the phone?

Yes of course. If it is regarding details on entering this competition, please call us on 0208 234 6469 (Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:30). Will I recieve feedback if my application is declined?

Because of the high number of applications we receive, we are unable to provide tailored feedback for applications declined at first stage. Feedback is available for applications declined at second stage.

Who are the judges?

We have chosen four judges with very different backgrounds to ensure every angle is met.

  • Dee Caffari MBE, Sunsail Ambassador and one of the most inspiring women in sailing.
  • Helena Lucas MBE, double Paralympic medallist and Sunsail Ambassador.
  • Mark Jardine, YachtsandYachting.com Online Editor and highly seasoned sailor
  • Simon Boulding, Events Director at Sunsail.

What will they be looking for?

The judges will be looking for a sailing club to whom £5k will make a really make a difference. Imaginative ideas that have a real impact will be prioritised. They will also being make sure that each proposal adheres to at least one of the following criteria, if not more:

  • increase membership
  • improve club facilities
  • improve sailing equipment
  • promote youth/sailability sailing
  • improve members’ sailing skills
  • something completely new and innovative

What can my club spend the money on?

The club will be awarded the money on the proviso that they use the money on the project(s) outlined in their entry form. This could be anything from sailability initiatives to incentives for potential new members, buying new equipment or smartening up the club. The more innovative the idea, the better. However this will not include every day payments such as the club house’s monthly electricity bill.

How long do I have to enter?

All entries must be submitted by Thursday 08 December 2016. The shortlist will be drawn by Thursday 15 December 2016. The winner will be informed by Thursday 22 December 2016 and announced on Friday 06 January 2017 at Sunsail stand during the London Boat Show 2017.

How will the winner receive their prize?

If you are the lucky winner then this is how you can claim your three prizes:

  • £5000 – the winning club can send in invoices from the suppliers they use to implement their ideas from their winning submission up to the maximum value of £5000. Each invoice will need to be made payable to Mariner International Travel UK Limited at DST House, St Mark’s Hill, London, KT6 4BH. All invoices will need to be in by Friday 30 June 2017.
  • An evening Q&A with Dee Caffari MBE – a member of the Sunsail team will be in touch with the winning club to discuss dates that work for both Sunsail, the winning club and Dee Caffari MBE. This evening will need to be taken by 31 March 2017.
  • Three tickets to the London Boat Show 2017 – on Thursday 22 December 2016 when the winning club is announced, Sunsail will get in touch with the club and ask how best to deliver the tickets. They will be allocated for Friday 06 January 2017. It will give you a great chance to not only receive your prize from our other Sunsail ambassador and Paralympic medallist Helena Lucas MBE but the winning club will have the opportunity to stay on the Sunsail stand all day and can use it to help promote their sailing club.
