On 15th January 2022, a large eruption of the Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha-apai underwater volcano caused a Pacific-wide tsunami and ash to fall in Tonga. The tsunami wave of 1.2 metres hit the coastline in and around Nuku’alofa, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Thankfully, our base team in Tonga are safe and due to the location of the base in outer island Vava’u, we sustained less damage than the majority of the islands.

In response to this devastating natural disaster, we are unable to offer Tonga as a cruising destination at this time. We are providing continuous support to our base team in Tonga.

Dramatic, unspoilt and enchanting

The unique geography of the Tongan Archipelago offers exciting blue water sailing and easier line-of-sight island hopping, giving you the chance to discover distant shores untouched by human hands.

Just 52 of the 177 palm-strewn islands of the Tongan Archipelago are permanently inhabited. Our Tongan base, a partner location, is found on blissful Vava’u, a fertile volcanic island of coral reefs, isolated lagoons and limestone cliffs located thousands of miles from the nearest large landmass.

Anchor opposite deserted tropical beaches and unpopulated islands bordered by coral reefs, perfect for diving and snorkelling. Taste the islands’ delicious fresh fruit and attend traditional Tongan feasts, experiencing the unique island culture first-hand. Sail the aquamarine waters of the South Pacific in the company of majestic humpback whales and take in thrilling water sports including kite surfing and windsailing. A Tongan sailing holiday is a once-in-a-lifetime treat.
